In January 2003 Sun presented its project for a new Supply Chain model.
Taking advantage of Supply Chain advances to minimize touch points and streamline fulfilment processes, reducing Sun's costs.
* Reduce the amount of time Sun holds finished goods inventory
* Ship directly from supplier to customer, where possible (Direct)
* Replace Sun owned warehouses with high velocity consolidation capabilities (Xdock)
* One consolidation point per geography, 3 Geographies (Americas, EMEA, APAC)
* Increase leverage of 3PL and Mfg Supplier capabilities
* Execute orders based on information rather than on hand inventory
* Supplier's own freight inbound to consolidation point.
* Sun owns freight outbound from suppliers and from consolidation point to customer.
The Customer order triggers the source being Sun manufacturing or external Suppliers. For Single-source orders, Finished goods will ship directly from the source to the customer. For Multi-sourced orders, Finished goods will ship from the different sources to a Consolidation point (Xdock Hub) before shipping to the end customer.

To validate this process, Frans Maas Logistics hired me for client Sun Microsystems to deliver a test approach to guarantee the quality of this business critical process.
